Wescue: Meet Ricky

Ricky is a poor little Westie who was abused by his owners. The stress gave him a skin condition, which as you can see, led to loss of hair and sores. Fortunately, Ricky has been rescued by Westie Rescue and by Wescue, Kitchen Magic's animal rescue charity. Wescue took him to a new home where he can get the care and love he deserves. He is a frendly little guy who has responded to kindness and will soon be happy.

Holiday Party Tips

'Tis the time of year to feel festive and see family and old friends. Here are some tips to make your holiday party a success.

Give invitees plenty of warning. Last minute invitations at a time when folks are busy are likely to be spurned.

Pick any day but Saturday and Sunday. The weekends will be booked already. Friday or Thursday nights are perfect.

Be relaxed and casual, but have a theme. It can be as simple as gathering to watch favorite movies of the season, or gathering around a guita ror piano to sing carols and holiday songs.

Balance families and singles so you have a mixed guest list.

Enjoy yourself while you prepare. Listen to great music, abd get ready the day before so you'll be relaxed when the party actually comes.

Decorate with fresh flowers and candles in every room. Avoid scented candles as some guests may have allergies. Light up the fireplace, if you have one.

Tasty easy small food is best. Lots of cheese and crackers, chips and dips, and hors d'ouevres. Prosciutto, salmon and olives add sophisticated flair, and kids love cookies.

Have lots of beverages (both adult and soft drinks) and lots of ice. Some non-alcoholic choices might be juice mixed with seltzer, or ginger ale with a splash of grenadine syrup. A lot of fizzy water on hand makes a wonderful choice. If you are offering a punch with alcohol, avoid any carbonated mixer; alcohol is abosrbed quicker when carbonated.

Mix and mingle. Don't get stuck in a corner. Keep an eye on your guests. Holidays often bring out overindulgence. If one of your quests seems indisposed, be sure he gets a ride home or a cab.

Recipe: Turkey Tetrazzini

A week from today is Thanksgiving, and afterwards, if your family is like ours, you'll have leftover turkey. Here's a tasty recipe that uses those leftovers:

8 ounces of cooked spaghetti
2 tablespoons of minced onion
3 tablespoons of butter
1 tablespoon of flour
1 cup of turkey (or chicken) broth
1 cup of milk
1 can of cream of mushroom soup
1 can shredded cheddar cheese
3 cups of chopped, cooked turkey
¼ cup of dry white wine
8 ounces of sauteed mushrooms
2 tablespoons of dried or fresh parsley
½ cup of slivered almonds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour. Add broth, and stir until the mixture thickens. Add broth, salt, milk, cream of mushroom soup, and cheese. Cook until the cheese melts, continuing to stir frequently.

Stir in the turkey, mushrooms, wine, parsley, and almonds. Place spaghetti into a 10 X 13 baking dish. Pour the sauce over the spaghetti and mix until noodles are coated and turkey is distributed fairly evenly throughout the dish. Bake for 45 minutes.

Organize Your Closet Today!

Tired of having a messy closet? Here are some steps you can take to make your closet space more organized and accessible.

You should have nothing in your closet that isn't currently wearable. Take out anything that doesn't fit or is out of style. If you haven't worn a particular item of clothing in a year, ask yourself when you will wear it again, and answer honestly.

Make sure everything in your closet goes with something else. If you have items in your closet that have sentimental or nostalgic value but are not likely to be worn, put them in storage. Remove anything that needs to be cleaned or that needs either alterations or mending.

Separate clothing by season, and put the off-season clothing in storage. Separate formal clothing from work clothing from casual clothing and group like with like. For quick and easy dressing, hang full outfits together.

If you have clothes that have come back from the cleaners, take them out of the plastic bags; those clutter up your closet. Rehang the clothes onpadded or plastic tubular hangers. Wire hangers make marks in the shoulders of your shirts and cardboard crossbars get sticky and leave a line on folded pants. Take your wire hangers to the dry cleaner so the hangers can be recycled.

Entertaining: Thanks for Friends Giving

Thanksgiving is just two weeks from today, a time to spend with family. Thanksgiving dinner is a time for fuss and elaborately cooked meals, and often a source of stress.

Your friends will likely be with their families on that day. But why not show your appreciation for them with a Thanks for Friends Giving party sometime before or after the holiday?

Make it low key--there will be enough stress on Turkey Day itself. Pizza, burgers, hot dogs or pasta dishes, with salad, and plenty of beverages. It's a great time to drag out mementos and photos of the good times you and your friends have had, or just sit around reminiscing. Play games like charades and Trivial Pursuit, or if the weather's right, go out and toss a football around.

It's a great way to unwind and spend some time with people you are grateful to have in your life.

This is little Debbie, a charming young Westie. Sadly, she has a skin condition that requires treatments for about two months.

Her owner fell on hard times and did not have the money to pay for her food and medicine. She called Westie Rescue, who took her in. Wescue, Kitchen Magic's animal rescue charity, picked her up, and it was heartbreaking as her owner cried.

Her skin is showing improvement, but she needs a new owner who can care for her. She is very sweet and accustomed to indoor life.

Maxie appears to be a mini-Schnauzer, who comes from a home that did not want him any more. He is VERY energetic and very sweet. A young family who had recently lost a min-Schnauzer adopted him briefly, but there were allergy issues, and they had to return him. That is why we suspect he is not a pure-bred Schnauzer.

Since 1979, Kitchen Magic has provided quality kitchen refacing and remodeling to our customers at an affordable price. You've helped us become the largest kitchen refacer in the U.S. We will celebrate its 30th anniversary in November of this year, and to celebrate, we'll look back at some of what made 1979 special.

Earlier we looked back and reminisced about the top music hits for 1979. We also had a look at the top movies of that year.

In 1979, there were just over 76 million households with televisions, but viewers were pretty much confined to the three broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS (Fox was many years in the future) or a few local channels. Just one out of every five homes had access to cable TV, and Time magazine marveled that cable viewers might be able to see as many as 36 channels on it some day.

Let's count down the thirty most popular shows in 1979. Last week we looked at shows #6 through #10. The week before that #11 through #20, and before that, #21 through #30.

Recipe: Pumpkin Pie from Scratch

Reader Helen T. from Moonachie, NJ, gives us this recipe for homemade pumpkin pie:

If you're going to make pumpkin pie from scratch, you want a small sugar pumpkin, not the big field pumpkin used for jack o'lanterns. Wash the pumpkin with warm water to remove any dirt, then cut it in half with a serrated knife or a small saw.

Scoop out the seeds and save them for roasting. Remove the stem and put the pumpkin pieces in a microwavable bowl. (You may need to cut the pumpkin into smaller pieces.) Put a couple inches of water in the bowl and microwave until soft (about 10 minutes). You can also steam it on a stove for 30 minutes.

Scoop the meat out of the skin. Let it sit for 30 minutes and drain any standing water. Put it in a blender on puree for three minutes.

Mix three cups of pumpkin puree with 1 cup of sugar or 3/4 cup of honey. Add 1 teaspoon of ground cloves, 1 teaspoon of ground allspice, 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger, 4 large eggs, and 18 ounces of condensed milk. Mix well, Pour into a pie crust. This makes a fluffy pie; if you'd like a denser pie, use three eggs and 12 ounces of condensed milk.

Bake the pie for 15 minutes at 425 degrees, then turn the oven down to 350 degrees and bake another 45 minutes or so, until a table knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

By the way, to roast the seeds, wash them in warm water and dry on a paper towel for 30 minutes. Then mix them with a tablespoon of oil or melted butter and roast them in the oven at 250 degrees for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown. Salt them for a delicious snack.

Wescue: Rosie and Kelly Girl

Meet Rosie and Kelly Girl, with their friend Karen. Karen and her husband first rescued Kelly Girl some years ago from a puppy mill near Nashua, NH where she had spent her life as a prisoner for profit. Now she is living the good life she deserves.

Kelly Girl spreads her love and joy to others as a therapy dog, Karen and Kelly did the training and got certified, and now regularly visit Children's Hospital in Boston, the Spaulding Burn Unit, nursing homes, and homebound people, to brighten the days of others.

Rosie was recently found wandering the streets of New York City, abandoned. Wescue arranged for Karen and her husband to take them. Now the two Westies are great friends who spend happy weekends boating with their new family.

You can't change the world, but you can change the world for a few lucky animals. Please support your local animal shelter today!

In 1979, there were just over 76 million households with televisions, but viewers were pretty much confined to the three broadcast networks, ABC,NBC, and CBS (Fox was many years in the future) or a few local channels. Just one out of every five homes had access to cable TV, and Time magazine marvelled that cable viewers might be able to see as many as 36 channels on it some day.

Wescue: Update on Jane Doeg

Many of you remember the story of poor Jane Doeg, the Westie who was found on a street on Long Island. She had been abandoned after having been terribly abused. Her skin was covered with sores and almost all her hair was gone.

We are happy to report that she is recovering and has been renamed Blossom. She's living in Massachusetts with a family that loves and cares to her, thanks in part to Wescue, Kitchen Magic's animal rescue charity.

Animal shelters, unfortunately, often have pets who have been mistreated or abused. If you want to open your heart and home to one of them, be aware that it will take a lot of time and patience. Abused dogs may have difficulty relating to people or other pets. They may have an intense fear of people, and may overeat because they have been starved. Consult with your veterinarian as to the best way to help them.

You can't change the world, but can you can change the world for one lucky dog or cat. Support your local animal shelter today.

Recipe: Pumpkin & Wild Rice Soup

A reader calling herself "Moonchild" sends in this delicious-sounding autumn recipe.

2 cups cooked wild rice
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 cup chopped onion
4 cups chicken broth
1 can (16-ounces) pumpkin
1/8 teaspoon white pepper
1 cup heavy cream
Chives or parsley for garnish

Cook wild rice according to package directions. Melt butter in large
saucepan. Add onion and cook until light brown. Stir in broth and pumpkin.
Cook 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add wild rice and pepper; cook
10 minutes longer. Stir in cream; heat to boiling. Serve garnished with
chives or parsley.

Family Fun: Leaf Cards

Fall is here, and with it lots of family fun! Here's an easy and inexpensive activity you can do with your kids.

You'll need:

some fallen autumn leaves
white or colored paper
an old newspaper
poster paint and brushes
pencils, crayons or pens

Cover a workspace on counter or tabletop with the newspaper. Now take a piece of paper and fold it in half to make a card shape.

Take one of the leaves and put it on the newspaper, vein side up. Paint the leaf with poser pait.You can use one color for the entire leaf, or make different areas different colors.

Place the leaf vein side down on the paper and rub gently. You can repeat with other leaves if there is room on the paper. Let the paint dry.

Now write a happy message on the front of the card and inside, and voila! You and your kids have leaf cards to send to friends or family.

Recipe: Potato Soup

Autumn is soup weather, and reader Nelda G. was kind enough to share with us this hearty recipe for potato soup.

4 cups of potatoes cut into small chunks (about 4 large potatoes)
1/2 cup diced celery
1 cup diced onion
I diced carrot
4 slices of bacon, diced
smoked sausage cut in pieces (either kielbasa or bratwurst)
2 cups milk
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp oregano
minced parsley

Add vegetables to large pot. Add water to cover. Cook until tender, and mash.

Fry bacon. Add bacon and grease to pot. Add milk and stir until creamy consistency is reached. Add salt and spices and sausage. Cook slowly for another half-hour.

Nelda adds that the flavor improves if the soup is made earlier in the day and left to sit in the refrigerator before being reheated.

Phinneas (seen above in the pet carrier) is a cute little boy Westie from Lebanon Township, NJ, who is four years old. His owners had to give him up because they have teenagers and two other dogs, and Phinneas needs more attention to be happy. They want Phinneas to have a better life with people that have more time for him.

Kitchen Magic's pet rescue charity, Wescue, is taking him to his new owners, a retired nurse and her elderly mother. They are very eager to get him and can hardly wait! They will be living in two homes, one in Massachusetts and a summer home in Maine.

Phinneas is seen above with Shannon and Molly, the mother and daughter pair who are now in their new home.

Organize Your Closet!

If you've got a cluttered closet, here are some tips for bringing order out of the chaos and making life easier.

Hold a fashion show. Empty your closet, then try on each garment in front of a mirror. Does it fit? What will you wear it with? When will you wear it?

Separate the clothes into piles: those that need mending; those that can and will be worn now; those that can and will be worn in other seasons; those that you don't want anymore but that can be donated; and those that need to be thrown away. Follow the same steps with your shoes.

Toss the hangers that don't match and the wire hangers, which damage clothes. Now put those shoes and clothes that will be worn now back in the closet. Put the ones for other seasons elsewhere. Put garments that go together in the closet together, so outfits can be assembled quickly.

Shannon and Molly are about 2 years old. From the way they behave and look, we think they are mother and daughter Westie blends (maybe mixed with Cairn Terrier).

They were discovered abandoned in some bushes in Edgewater, NJ. They have been under the Westie Rescue care for a couple of weeks now. They are called two “cup-cakes" (since they are as sweet as can be). They have been have been spayed and micro-chipped by the Westie Rescue folks. Wescue, the Kitchen Magic animal rescue charity, is taking them to live with a retired couple in Massachusetts today.

Recipe: Panzanella Salad

A reader sends in a number of recipes for tomatoes. Here's a particularly delicious one.

5 cups chopped seeded tomatoes
1/2 cup sliced scallions
1/2 cup chopped yellow bell pepper
1/2 cup chopped fresh flat leaf parsley
1/2 cup chopped fresh sweet basil
1/2 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 garlic clove, minced
1 small French bread, cut into 3/4" cubes

In a large glass bowl, combine tomatoes, scallions, bell pepper, parsley, and basil. Season with salt and pepper, tossing to blend.

In a small bowl, whisk together lemon juice, olive oil, and garlic. Add dressing to salad, tossing to coat. Cover and chill 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Arrange bread cubes on a large baking sheet. Bake until toasted and dry, about 12 minutes. Cool slightly. Add bread to salad, tossing to combine.

Recipe: Crispy Onion Patties

Reader Dick E. of Bellmore, NY says, "I am OBSESSED with this recipe! I can't wait to try it with shrimp, crab, and/or yellow squash added!"

2 1/2 cups onions, finely chopped
3/4 cup flour
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon cornmeal
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk

Mix dry ingredients, then add milk (batter should be fairly thick). Add chopped onions and mix thoroughly. Drop by spoonsful into hot oil. Flatten slightly when you turn them.

In Connecticut, see Kitchen Magic at the Norwalk Seaport Oyster Festival, where there will be music, international cuisine, arts and crafts, children's activities and rides, and oysters, of course. Hours are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, 11 a.m.to 11 p.m. tomorrow, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

We'll also be at the Women's Expo at the Connecticut Expo Center in Hartford, Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.; at the Bethlehem Fair in Bethlehem, CT, Friday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and at the North Haven Fair, in North Haven, CT, Friday 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Longfellow's Autumn Arts and Crafts festival will be held in Sudbury, MA, Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Kitchen Magic will be there, along with live music, vendors, arts and crafts and more. We'll be at the Tewksbury Common Autumn Craft Blowout in Tewksbury, MA, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,; at the New England Culture Fest, featuring ethical fashion, global cuisine, world music, film, dance, interactive art and more, in Lowell, MA, Saturday 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and at the Raynham Flea Market in Raynham, MA, Sunday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

In Pennsylvania, we’ll be at the Upper Black Eddy Firemen’s Carnival from 6 to midnight. Saturday will feature fireworks at 9:45 p.m.

Helene H. of Woonsocket, RI, sends us this delightful and easy party snack:

1 16 oz can salmon
8 oz cream cheese, softened
2 tsp grated onion
1 tsp horseradish
1 tsp lemon juice
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp liquid smoke
3 tbsp chopped parsley
½ cup chopped pecans

Mix the first seven ingredients together and chill. Form into a ball or two logs, and roll in parsley and nuts. Chill before serving with crackers.

Recipe: Bombay Potatoes

From Melissa M., parts unknown, comes a spicy recipe from India that makes a great side dish…or a main dish if you fancy vegetarian. You can increase the amount of spices as your taste allows.

1 large potato, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
1 large tomato, chopped
½ teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon curry powder
½ teaspoon chile powder
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Put the spices and oil in a large frying pan over medium heat until they darken. Add the onion and sauté unitl golden.
Add the potato and sauté for ten minutes.
Add the tomato, reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for ten more minutes. Serve with flat bread.
Serves 2.

Recipe: Waikiki Meatballs

From Carol M. in Framingham, MA, a family favorite:

1 -1/2 lbs ground beef
2/3 cup cracker crumbs
1/3 cup finely chopped onion
1 egg
1-1/2 tsp salt
¼ tsp ground ginger
¼ cup milk
2 tbsp oil
2 tbsp corn starch
½ cup brown sugar
13-1/4 oz can of pineapple chunks in syrup
1/3 cup vinegar
1 tbsp soy sauce
1/3 cup chopped green pepper

Mix beef, cracker crumbs, onion, beaten egg, salt, ginger and milk. Shape mixture into 1-1/2” balls. Add oil to large skillet and cook meatballs over medium heat, turning until done.

Remove meatballs from skillet and keep them warm. Drain skillet. Mix corn starch and sugar in skillet, and blend in syrup from the pineapple, vinegar and soy sauce until smooth.

Return skillet to medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. Boil and stir one more minute. Add meatballs, pineapple and green pepper, and heat to desired temperature.

With rice, it serves six.

Kitchen Magic will be at the Monmouth County Fair in New Jersey this weekend. Above, our new sales rep Bryan Young meets the public at our booth. Rob Lepone and Joanne Laux will be on hand this weekend to help answer questions and provide information. Other attractions at the fair will include animal shows, racing pigs, lumberjack shows, and home and garden competition, and stage entertainment. Tonight is Circus Night until 11 p.m., with a barbecue competition and a Springsteen tribute scheduled. Tomorrow from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. is Children’s Day, including kid races and R&B, Soul and disco entertainment. Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. will be Senior’s Day, with free admission for those 65 and older, a swing band and an antique auto show. The fair is at East Freehold Park on Koslowski Road in Freehold, NJ.

You’ll also find us this weekend at the Barnstable County Fair on Cape Cod in East Falmouth, MA. There will also be animal shows, 4-H demonstrations, petting zoos, horticulture displays, rides, games, live music, arts & crafts, and food. Brian Howe, former lead singer of Bad Company, will entertain on Saturday, July 25. The Fair will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. all weekend.
Also in Massachusetts, we’ll be at the Raynham Flea Market at the corner of Judson and South Street, Raynham. The market will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. all weekend.

Kitchen Memory: Haunted, Part Five

Blog reader Jenny C. has been kind enough to send us a very detailed and suspenseful kitchen memory that also includes the bathroom, the rest of the house and the yard. We'll be running it in installments on Thursday afternoons. In part one, Jenny took a Polaroid of her family. When a blurry shape appears in the photo, Jenny teases her family by pretending it is a ghost. In part two, more Polaroids show a blurry shape that appears to be an actual ghost. In part three, Jenny and her infant daughter were locked in a bathroom out of earshot of help. And in part four last week, a friend’s skepticism about ghosts causes a ball of energy to appear in the kitchen, killing all the lights.

WHOA! Karen, Gene, Amy and I all begged Gary NOT to say that again. He yelled back from the back hallway to just simmer down- it was a blown fuse. He'd already grabbed a flashlight and made his way to the fuse box and replaced the fuse within seconds, releasing the lights to light again.

But the kitchen crowd was abuzz. In the month that we had lived there we had blown dozens of fuses- about one a day. But never, I say never before, had we had a lightning bolt fly out of our kitchen sink.

The smell of ozone still heavy in the air, we tried to convince Gary that it was a ghostly act. The engineer in the guys and myself tried to explain it away any other way. The phone lines are usually grounded on the cold water pipes. Thus the water pipes stored up enough energy to shoot big lightning balls out of the faucet as if Thor himself was in charge of the plumbing. The non-ghost theories were more far-fetched than the ghost theory ever was.

None of this conjecture was making any sense. So we blamed the lights and lightning incident on the ghost and Gary's mantra of disbelief, which we all felt was annoying the ghost as much as it was annoying us.
Some of us hypothesized that this mantra was a direct challenge to the ghost to prove himself. The light show may have been the ghost's chosen form of proof for all we knew. And of course Gary just had to say it again, even though we begged him not to. We guessed where he was headed, with the conversation having been there already many times that night. But he did it anyway. He said it.

"I keep telling you guys, that there's no such thing as ghosts!"

No sooner had the words parted his lips, than the faucet returned an exact replica of that first lightning bolt into the kitchen sink. The next sound I heard was the slam of the back door as Gene and Karen yelled a hasty goodbye and "We'll call you in the morning to see if you all are still alive."

It was very difficult to get Amy to bed that night. She begged to sleep with us on the floor in our bedroom rather than in her room- the maid's quarters just above the kitchen. In order to convince her that all was well, we looked in closets, under beds, on the balcony, locked the balcony door, pulled back the shower curtains, and more than one round of this was demanded. Finally, she was calmed down and tucked into bed and we retired to our master bedroom where Gary reached for the maid's bell button on the wall. My pleas fell on deaf ears- really. He grinned a devil's grin and pushed the button.

The sound of Amy hitting her door to open it inward, when she so desperately wanted to go outward, rang through the house. The thud of her feet pounding down the hallway into our bedroom had Gary doubled over in laughter. But Amy was hysterical.

While Gary recovered composure enough to demonstrate the bell to Amy and he "recleared” her room, I put Noel back to sleep. Finally we all went to bed and I know I slept. In fact I slept fairly soundly.

The next morning the phone rang as it was now working just fine, although no one had done anything at all to fix it during the night. Gene and Karen inquired on our state. I replied "Michigan" and Gary replied "Confusion” and our friends thus knew we were both normal as ever.

Joke about it or not, Gary will tell you he is now a believer and there just might be such a thing as ghosts.

Well, now you know when I became a true believer. A believer with proof. It was during the summer of '79 in a house in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. One such event and you too will doubt no more- if you doubt at all, that is.

Memories & Moon Facts

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the daring voyage of Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins, here are some moon facts.

The moon makes its closest approach to the earth tonight, just 222,117 miles away. Coastal areas will experience higher than usual tides. The longest solar eclipse of the 21st century will also occur tonight, as the moon blocks the sun for nearly seven minutes. Unfortunately, it will only be visible in India and China.

NASA currently has the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter circling the moon with a high resolution camera. The bottom stage of the Eagle can still be seen in the Sea of Tranquility here.

Kitchen Magic Blueberry Fun

Here's genial sales rep Rob Lepone manning the Kitchen Magic booth at the recent Blueberry Festival in Bethlehem, PA. Doug K. of Macungie, PA, and Diedre S. of Bethlehem won custom cheesboards at the booth.

Festivities included a horse-drawn carousel, a petting zoo, a pie-eating contest (of course!) and live music. A video of the event is also available.

Wescue: Jane Doeg

Poor little Jane Doeg was found abandoned on a street on Long Island, bloodied & red. Someone had abused her terribly. Her skin was covered with sores, and she had only one little knot of fur on top of her head.

Despite all that she's been through, she's gentle and loves to be around people. Wescue, Kitchen Magic's animal rescue charity, will be taking her to Massachusetts next week to a new family that will give her the care, love and attention she deserves. In the meantime, the Kitchen Magic staff will be thinking up a new name for her.

Lots of animals are abandoned every day, and need a caring owner. Support your local animal shelter today.

Kitchen Memory: Haunted, Part Four

Blog reader Jenny C. has been kind enough to send us a very detailed and suspenseful kitchen memory, that also includes the bathroom, the rest of the house and the yard. We'll be running it in installments on Thursday afternoons. In part one, Jenny takes a Polaroid of her family. When a blurry shape appears in the photo, Jenny teases her family by pretending it is a ghost. In part two, more Polaroids show a blurry shape that appears to be an actual ghost. In part three, Jenny and her infant daughter were locked in a bathroom out of earshot of help.

Noel was crying so hard now she was sobbing. I finally decided that I had to calm down to keep her from being scared. But now every additional second that I was "trapped" brought an ever-stronger sense of evil intent. Finally out of desperation, I grasped the lock mechanism from the top of the sink, jammed it into the gaping hole from which it had originally been extracted and…

The bolt shot back into the door. Without any time for a plan to materialize, one popped into my head. I grabbed the doorknob, stuffed it in the appropriate hole and turned and pulled. The door opened as easily as if Ali Baba had just said "OPEN SESAME." The frozen door had thawed. Noel and I made good our escape.

Dashing with baby in arm, we burst into the back yard blurting and babbling our story the whole way. The very real level of upset on both our faces convinced Gene and Karen and Amy that something quite wrong had just happened.

Needless to say, the talk at the supper table went right into everyone's belief or disbelief of ghosts. Karen told stories of her Mom's family's haunted house in upstate New York.

Then stories of bouncing tables that could tell family secrets were shared. A game they called "Up Table Up". We thought we'd give this game a try after supper. But alas this Victorian parlor game did not work for us. The three women at the table tried for over an hour to get that card table to play with them while the men, Gene and Gary watched. The minute the mood at the table started to get at all serious and just about "right", Gary would reach down, grab a close table leg and shake it just to watch us ladies jump with surprise. We eventually tired of the pursuit, mainly because Gary did not.

Gene offered to make a phone call to Karen's WWII veteran father, Jack, as proof that "Up Table Up" really worked. Gary agreed that if Jack said it worked then he'd believe that the game worked, but that didn't prove that there were ghosts. "Because there's no such thing as ghosts!" He'd repeated this after every shred of evidence we'd given throughout the dinner and continued saying it as his mantra into the evening.

Finally, he agreed to call Jack to get his testimony. But the phone line was dead. Now this was of very dear concern to me. I just happened to be, at that time, the manager of the engineering group that was responsible for making sure that telephone exchange had adequate capacity. My personal phone was supposed to be protected from outage.

Just to be sure that there was not a general outage at the switch, we sent Gary over to the neighbor's to see if their phone still worked.

The report back to us was that their phone still worked. We stood around the kitchen kanoodling this predicament. Well, if their phone was working, why wasn't my protected phone line working? Of course the believers in the crowd used this as further evidence of a ghostly hand. That line of logic of course just brought another of Gary's mantras, "There's no such thing as ghosts!"

But this time, no sooner had he said it than a three-foot ball of blue electrical ozone smelling explosion shot into the kitchen sink from the faucet. Oh, and the lights in the house went dead.

Kitchen Magic will be holding a special event at the BJ's Wholesale Club at 300 State Route 17 in East Rutherford, NJ, July 16-19 from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM each day.

We'll also be at the Blueberry Festival at Burnside Plantation in Bethlehem, PA, July 18 from 11 AM to 8 PM and July 19 from 11 AM to 7 PM. We'll be giving away custom chopping boards to four lucky families. There will also be a horse-drawn carousel, a petting zoo, live music, and craft and cooking demonstrations. Attendees who join the Historic Bethlehem Partnership at the event will get free blueberry pie and ice cream. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $4 for kids from 12 to 18, and younger kids are free.
